Last Saturday, volunteers from the Food Commons Foundation visited the Tzu Chi Environmental Action Centre to explore the concepts of environmental education and sustainable development. This green museum, which was converted from an old village school, uses environmentally friendly building materials such as bamboo, palm fiber recycled boards and Fuhui bricks and is equipped with a rainwater recycling system, fully embodying the wisdom of green architecture.
The museum’s permanent exhibition “Common Understanding, Common Consensus, and Collective Actions." promotes environmental protection concepts through art, reminding everyone: "Today is the result of our past actions; Today is the future’s history," emphasising the importance of current actions. The exhibition covers themes such as "To co-exist with the earth" and "Purity at the Source" and features interactive exhibits to help volunteers gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between humans and the environment. In addition, the Da Ai Technology Room showcases Tzu Chi’s environmentally friendly products, such as recycled fabrics made from recycled plastics, to promote sustainable fashion and expand the possibilities of environmental protection knowledge.

The volunteers then visited the Food Commons Foundation’s regional partner, the Shatin Women's Association, to learn how Tai Wai District collects, screens and shares vegetables from the market every Monday to Friday evening to benefit more people in need. During the discussion, everyone shared their experiences and challenges in cherishing food and jointly thought about solutions. During the event, participants received food bags, and long-term volunteers were given badges and luggage scales to record the weight of the bread saved.
From July to December 2024, the volunteer activities of the Food Commons Foundation covered Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories. A total of 851 people participated in the food rescue operation, collecting 15,395 loaves of bread and 1,413 lunch boxes, totalling 3,145.22 kilograms. The beneficiaries reached 8,423 people, including homeless people, scavengers, cleaners, the elderly and low-income families.Thank you to all the volunteers for their selfless dedication, which has enabled the concept of environmental protection and food conservation to be passed on. We sincerely invite more people to join the ranks of volunteers and contribute to the community!
